9A - Testing the Hypothesis - Part 2

Who : There are certain people who do not fall inside the boundary of this need. Obviously, anyone who does not ride a scooter does not fall into this need. In contrast, people who do own scooters but also do own helmets and wear them do not fall into this need. After conducting my five interviews, I also realized some people will never want this need because they do not feel dangerous while on a scooter. One of my interviewees has been driving dirt bikes and motorcycles his whole life and claimed driving a scooter is easy for him and a helmet isn't necessary.

What: Two of my interviewees mentioned that scooter helmets would not completely eliminate injuries- or even head injuries for that matter. Another interviewee also refused to buy a helmet because they do not want to hurt their perception.

Why: I believe that this need is necessary, whether people acknowledge it or not. There are way too many scooter related incidents and fatalities annually in Gainesville for this not be a pressing issue. Society needs to look past the negative connotation associated with helmets and wear them for their own safety.

Inside The Boundary

Who: - College students who own a scooter
- City residents who own a scooter

What: - To help reduce scooter related head injuries
- To give people a sense of self responsibility and safety

Why: - To give a sense of style and social acceptable behind a scooter helmet
- To test a market that is currently lacking

Outside The Boundary

Who: -College students or city residents who do not own a scooter
- Individuals who do not care for their safety and care about their perception

What: - To completely eliminate scooter related head incidents
- To give drivers more confidence to drive, not fearing injury or accident

  1. Hey Ryan, I like how you are talking about safety while riding on a scooter. I agree with you that helmet should be worn at all times while on a scooter for the safety of yourself. Helmets does not completely eliminate injuries but it sure does help from making the situation even worse in an accident and the head is the most important to protect while on a scooter. Good job!

  2. Hi Ryan,
I agree with you and I think helmets should definitely be worn at all times when driving a scooter. Helmets are not a fashion statement and people need to stop worrying about the way it looks, they simply need to wear them for their safety. I think this should definitely be implemented and if designing them nicer would help I think it's worth it. Good job!

  3. Hi Ryan,
I do feel helmets are extremely important. Someone I know actually just got into a motorcycle accident about a month ago and he was wear a helmet, but it wasn't tight enough and flew off on impact and he ended up with a really bad concussion. Helmets alone are important and so is the proper use of one. This wouldn't have helped the arm he broke, but it for sure would have saved him the awful concussion he got. Unfortunately with some people no matter how much you tell them how dangerous it is not to, they still feel invincible until they experience or witness it first hand.
